MEMORIES... The Poem... "Rainbow Bridge"... "Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together...."
Author unknown Valerie & I adopted Bentley in 1999 from our local SPCA. He spent three years with his foster parents before we found him. Bentley was a loving cat but was by no means active. He very rarely played and spent most of his time sleeping. Never-the-less, he loved to be loved and offered us many fond memories. Bentley developed Colon Cancer and passed in March 2008. Often, when Valerie and I would be outside, we would see Bailey’s owners drive slowly by. In the back seat of their car would be this big boy of a Golden. As our dogs Simon, Sadie, and Moe barked at Bailey's presence, he would just smile from ear to ear. Bailey never barked back; he just looked about contented.
Like many Goldens, Bailey was a gentle-giant of a K9 - well behaved, compassionate, and very loving. What set him apart from the pack were his ever present smile, his extremely relaxed manner, and his overwhelming desire to please those around him.
We loved walking Bailey. He was extremely well behaved and happy to be out in the fresh air. Although, many times after walking a mile or so; he was also very happy to get back home to his family.
A few nights before his death, Barry was pet sitting Bailey while his owners were out for the evening. They went for a walk and played a bit in the front yard. Barry sensed Bailey wanted company and he was happy to spend extra time with him. Together, they just sat quietly near each other and enjoyed the beautiful summer evening. Bailey developed Lymphoma and passed August 9th, 2008. We miss our "gentle-giant" friend.
